Valentine Heart Family Tree

2/10/2016

My kids have been so excited for Valentine's Day, we just had to do another Valentine's-related family tree activity. This time, we cut out paper hearts and attached them using small brass brads. We printed out names and relationships and glued them on the sides of each heart, and then cut out photos and "hung" them on little strips of paper from the center of each heart.

Valentine Heart Family Tree - Four Generations
Using the brads to connect the hearts instead of glue makes the entire "tree" flexible, so it makes interacting with the 'tree' a very tactile and hands-on activity. The natural shape of the heart makes it so that you can add as many generations as you wish without running out of space. It even starts to resemble the leaves and branches of a tree as you add more and more generations!

The brass brads we used were small - about 3/4" in total length. We used normal construction paper and a glue stick for the words and photos. You can use whatever colors the kids like - I think it would be neat to have each generation as a different color.
